An unspoiled island off Methoni with rare plants, clear water and Roman sarcophagi lying on the seabed.
Sapientza is the second largest island of the Messenian Oinousses after Schiza, lying off the south-western coast across from Methoni.
Rare flora and deep water
It is a lush, unspoiled island with rare flora, rising to a highest point of 219 metres. Tourist boats run across from Methoni in season.
The waters around it hold notable shipwrecks, among them columns from Herod's colonnade at Caesarea and Roman sarcophagi.
On a clear day you can see the island from the balconies of the Blue Houses Apartments.
